Mr Dowland’s Midnight is a unique, imaginative and highly original band. We offer our audience a rich journey from West to East, from ancient to modern and back with plenty of improvisation on the way.
Mr Dowland’s Midnight is a new collaboration, starting initially as an oud/guitar duo in spring 2012. We have now been joined by Jake McMurchie on sax and in this combination we have just recorded our first album “9 lives”.
Our programme includes arrangements of traditional Irish and Sephardic tunes, music by Eric Satie, John Dowland and increasingly originals.
Knud Stűwe is a much in demand and very versatile guitarist and composer. He also works for : Instant Wit (Improvised Comedy Show), Baraka (High Life) , Chai For Two (Modern Jazz, Klezmer and Originals).
Simon Leach is a multi-instrumentalist based in Bristol. He currently plays guitar with EastPole Orchestra (Balkan Fusion) and oud percussion with Souk Babelouk (Middle Eastern) and Chai For Two (Klezmer and Jazz). He also enjoys playing for contact improvisation dance.
Jake McMurchie is an outstanding saxophone player and was described as “…a very, very good tenor saxophonist – very original, very passionate… with a sexy sound.” (Jack Massarick, Jazz Line-up Radio 3). As a member of “Get the Blessing” he won the BBC Jazz Award for best album in 2008 and he has toured extensively in the UK, Europe and the world, including a 10 date tour of the USA and Canada in 2012.
